Rethinking Campus Transit: Exploring Two New Bus Hubs for a Smoother, Safer Ride Through Campus Core

Quick Summary

  • We’re exploring how campus could change as transportation needs evolve. Your feedback will help shape and refine future design directions. Please share your feedback by December 15, 2025

Every weekday, thousands of Aggies move through the heart of UC Davis – walking, biking, scooting and catching buses that converge around the Silo bus terminal and Hutchison Drive. As part of Moving Forward Together (MFT), we’ve gathered community feedback on campus travel, and many of you said this is one of the most challenging spots to navigate, especially during class “passing times” when thousands of Aggies are on the move.

A New Approach: Are Two Hubs Better Than One?

To untangle the traffic and improve your travel experience in this area, UC Davis planners are exploring a new approach: retiring the current Silo bus terminal and replacing it with two new transit hubs, one on the east side of campus and one on the west.

Reducing or removing large buses from the campus core would allow more space for walking, biking, and getting Aggies where they need to go. Hutchison Drive could become calmer, safer, and more comfortable. A few buses may still travel across Hutchison drive, but it would be infrequent and only during non-passing times or a small shuttle might link the two hubs. For walkers, the trip between terminals would take about 10 minutes.

Please note, this is an early-stage concept, purely exploratory and not a plan! These are just early ideas to help spark conversation about how campus might change in the future as transportation needs evolve.

Imagine the future: Arriving at a Campus Gateway

Picture this: You arrive on campus at one of two new bus terminals (east or west) and start your day in a place designed for comfort and connection. You grab a coffee, meet a friend, or check your messages before class. You could store backpacks or workout gear in a locker until you needed them. Your bike would be waiting, clean and dry, in a secure storage area, ready for quick trips across campus. If you didn’t have a bike, you could hop on a bike or scooter share like Spin, take a shuttle bus or walk to your destination.

Please Share Your Thoughts and Ideas

As our campus grows and new ways of getting around appear, UC Davis is adapting. Working closely with Unitrans, the City of Davis, and our campus community, we’re committed to continually improving how people move through campus. Your feedback plays a key role in this process.

Leave Comments on the Interactive Map

Visit the interactive map to see the two exploratory transit hub designs. Using the pin tool (lower right corner), you can drop a pin and comment anywhere on the map. We welcome all feedback, whether it’s about safety, accessibility, walking routes, signage, bus connections or anything else.

You can react to others’ ideas by giving a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on their comments. All feedback is public and visible to help build a shared understanding of what works best.

The interactive maps are just initial concepts for what potential future transit hubs could look like— early ideas to help spark conversation.

Thank you for taking the time to contribute. Your input will help shape the next phase of planning for a safer, more connected UC Davis.
