Moving Forward Together is UC Davis' plan to enhance sustainable transportation on our campus and it begins with engagement. Where Are We Now?

Charting the Future of Campus Mobility Together

At UC Davis, mobility is more than just a way to get around—it’s a reflection of our values as a sustainable, connected, and forward-thinking campus. From world-class bike paths to zero-emission transit, our transportation system plays a major role in shaping daily life. But even strong systems need to adapt. We launched Moving Forward Together to fulfill our need for a campus-wide effort to reimagine how we move now and will evolve into the future.

From October to December 2024, we invited the campus community to share their experiences and ideas for improving mobility at UC Davis. Through 22 pop-up events, a community open house, interactive online tools, and targeted presentations, thousands of students, staff, and faculty shared their perspectives on what’s working—and what’s not—across campus.

We heard strong pride in our active transportation culture, especially the ease of biking. But people also pointed to clear opportunities for improvement, including better bike and pedestrian separation, calmer vehicle traffic, expanded bike and EV parking, improved lighting and signage, and safer, more intuitive intersections. This input helps us better understand both day-to-day challenges and long-term transportation needs.

FAQs

  • What is Moving Forward Together?
  • Moving Forward Together is UC Davis’ effort to improve its transportation systems. It begins with the large community engagement effort you see here. This overall planning effort seeks to address all modes of transportation—biking, walking, driving, bussing, and scooting—to make campus safer, more accessible, and sustainable. Your feedback will help shape real-world improvements and could unlock funding for projects that matter most to our community.
  • Why is community input important?
  • We believe that the people who use UC Davis’s transportation network every day know best where improvements are needed. By providing your input, you help ensure that the changes we propose truly reflect the needs of the campus community. Your feedback directly impacts how we prioritize projects and apply for external funding, including potential grants.
  • What kinds of changes could result from this effort?
  • The feedback we collect could lead to real changes such as expanded bike paths, improved pedestrian walkways, safer intersections, new electric scooter and bike stations, and better transit routes. We’re also focused on aligning our transportation network with our Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic-related injuries and fatalities, making the campus safer for everyone.
  • How will my feedback be used?
  • Your feedback will directly inform the development of UC Davis’s Sustainable Transportation Plan and help prioritize projects that align with the needs and values of the campus community. Additionally, your input will strengthen our case when applying for external funding, helping us secure the resources necessary to make many of these improvements a reality.
  • What is the Vision Zero goal, and how does it relate to this effort?
  • Vision Zero is UC Davis’s commitment to eliminate all traffic-related injuries and fatalities on campus. As part of Moving Forward Together, we are especially interested in hearing about areas where close calls or unsafe conditions are frequent. This feedback will help us target improvements that make walking, biking, and driving safer for everyone.
  • How is this initiative being inclusive of underserved communities?
  • We are committed to ensuring that Moving Forward Together represents the diverse voices of our campus. Special efforts will be made to reach out to underserved communities who may face additional barriers to safe and reliable transportation. We want to make sure that the transportation improvements benefit everyone, regardless of their background or mode of travel.
